Lenovo captures No. 1 global Windows AI PC ranking with 31% market share by embedding Azure AI Content Safety on-device

As Lenovo launched its AI PC portfolio powered by a personal AI agent, it faced a critical challenge: how to protect users from harmful content generation on-device, across diverse hardware, in over 200 markets with varying privacy regulations—even when offline.

Together with Microsoft Azure AI, Lenovo co-created a containerized edge AI deployment that embeds Azure AI Content Safety directly onto the device, enabling real-time content moderation with cloud-level accuracy, completely independent of internet connectivity.

The solution achieved millisecond-level response times with near-zero CPU usage, enabling seamless on-device AI safety protection. AI PCs now account for more than 30% of all Lenovo shipments, demonstrating that trust-driven innovation accelerates market adoption.

If the personal computer (PC) of the last forty years was our "telescope" for exploring the digital world, then in the AI era, it is evolving into our "second brain."

Lenovo decided to redefine the PC with the launch of the AI PC powered by a personal AI agent (Lenovo AI NOW). It marked more than just an iteration in hardware computing power; it signaled a philosophical restructuring of the human-machine relationship. In this vision, the computer is no longer just a tool that passively responds to commands, but an intelligent companion that understands you, interacts seamlessly, and even anticipates your needs.

However, this unprecedented level of "understanding" also opens a door to the unknown: As AI delves deeper into our most private data, documents, and creations, how do we establish the boundaries of trust? As computing power shifts from the cloud to the edge, how do we maintain a baseline of security even when offline?

This is the defining question of our time that Lenovo and Microsoft have joined forces to answer: How do we make AI ubiquitous while ensuring that safety is also ubiquitous?

The "impossible triangle" of privacy and intelligence

In Lenovo's strategic blueprint for “Smarter AI for All,” hybrid AI is the essential path forward. It requires AI capabilities to exist not only in the cloud but to be deeply embedded within the device itself. For the team at Lenovo IDG, this was more than a technology selection; it was a challenge to an "impossible triangle": they needed to build a global content safety barrier. This barrier had to comply with rigorous and varying privacy regulations across different countries while adapting to millions of heterogeneous hardware platforms (covering X86, ARM, NPU, GPU architectures). Most importantly, all of this had to be accomplished on-device.

It was a contradiction fraught with tension. Traditional cloud-based safety models are powerful but limited by connectivity and privacy concerns; conversely, purely local small models often struggle to match the precision and coverage of the cloud. How could a PC possess cloud-level discernment to prevent the generation of biased, hateful, or violent content while disconnected from the internet? At the project's inception, an off-the-shelf solution simply did not exist.

Building an offline "Cloud": The edge breakthrough with Azure AI

The key to breaking the deadlock lay in dissolving the physical boundary between the cloud and the edge.

Facing Lenovo's rigorous demands, the Microsoft Azure AI team did not just provide an API. Instead, they chose a far more difficult path of innovation: containerizing the core capabilities of Azure AI Content Safety and migrating them to the edge.

This was a bold engineering feat and the industry's first hybrid AI content safety solution. It meant compressing and encapsulating Microsoft's deep expertise in large model content safety into a lightweight container that could run directly on a user's laptop, independent of the cloud. Even when completely disconnected from the network, Azure AI acts as an invisible guardian ("Silent Guardian"), quietly vetting every interaction with generative AI to ensure content compliance.

This solution ingeniously realized a business model innovation of "offline deployment with cloud-based billing," while delivering ultimate performance at the technical level. After countless days and nights of joint optimization by engineers from both sides, this hybrid solution achieved astounding efficiency on Lenovo's diverse hardware—latency was compressed to approximately 250 milliseconds, with CPU usage remaining near zero. This "imperceptible" protection represents the highest realm of technology for good: you don't feel its presence, yet it is always there, guarding the bottom line.

“Through joint engineering and optimization, the final results were astounding,” said Hongye Jin, Technical Engineer at Lenovo. “The AI safety detection runs entirely on-device, achieving millisecond-level response time.”

A resonance of engineering cultures: The power of "One Microsoft"

Behind the technological breakthrough was a deep resonance between the cultures of two technology titans.

To meet the extremely aggressive shipment timeline of the PC industry—just a few months—Microsoft assembled a "One Microsoft" team (v-Team) spanning Azure engineering, marketing, legal, and sales. This collaboration transcended the traditional vendor-client relationship, evolving into a "back-to-back" camaraderie.

From daily syncs to code-level optimizations for specific chip instruction sets; from complex global compliance reviews to the innovation of commercial licensing models, the teams moved with the agility of a startup to drive a massive enterprise-level collaboration. It was this tight synergy that turned a seemingly impossible challenge into a new benchmark for the industry.

Trust is the currency of the AI era

The significance of this collaboration between Lenovo and Microsoft extends far beyond the successful launch of a single product. It not only validates the feasibility of the hybrid AI architecture but also delivers tangible business value to both parties.

As evidenced by the strong momentum in the latest financial data: Lenovo ranks #1 globally in the Windows AI PC segment with a 31% market share; meanwhile, AI PC penetration accelerated, accounting for more than 30% of all Lenovo PC shipments.

These positive figures indicate that the market is hungry not just for smarter PCs, but for safer PCs. By embedding Azure's safety capabilities into the terminal, Lenovo has endowed its AI PC with not only intelligence but also "responsibility." This allows users to enjoy the efficiency dividends of AI without having to make a difficult trade-off between convenience and privacy.

This, perhaps, is the truest meaning of "Smarter AI for All"—bringing the benefits of intelligence to everyone, while ensuring that everyone can embrace that intelligence with peace of mind.

“Looking ahead, we're excited to deepen our partnership with Microsoft for more secure efficient and personalized multimodal AI experiences across devices to build towards an intelligent ecosystem,” said AG Zheng, ED of AI Strategy at Lenovo. “That’s ‘Smarter AI for All.’”
