Mobile Indoor Navigation
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could easily find a particular store in a crowded shopping mall, or locate an office in an unfamiliar building, using just your cell phone? Feng Zhao, assistant managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, shows how the lab has developed reliable and accurate indoor positioning techniques using inertial sensors such as accelerometers, gyros, or compasses commonly found on commodity smartphones. This lecture walks you through the techniques of step detection, heading inference, as well as adaptive estimation of gait length, all illustrated in a demo of a user navigating to find a conference room using the prototype system.
